Claudia Lichtenberg Blog: My last Giro Rosa

It is the first day of the Giro today and I’m so excited! Excited to race, exited to be with my team and excited to race Giro Rosa with my team!

When I think in this stage race I get a very special feeling. All my career the Giro was a highlight in my calendar. My first time, in 2007, I came here to support Edita Pucinskaite to take Rosa. The feeling to win with her as a team was absolutely amazing. One year later I won a stage and the white jersey and I still thought that an overall win for myself would be very far away and maybe possible many years in the future. But it came so fast: In 2009 I won . And it felt like a dream. My team, the Cervélo Test Team, was incredible strong and standing behind me. I still have a very special connection to all the riders and staff who were in the winning team. After so many days of suffering together and supporting each other you come very close. To win together was overwhelming.

As mentioned, this was in 2009 and since then I kept the Giro as my main goal for most of the seasons. Many things happened in the following years. Ups and downs with hard crashes, two bad concussions, both of my parents died and I got married. With some more podium results I was happy but so far I couldn’t repeat the big win.

Now it will be my last Giro. I decided to end my career after this season. Of course it would be a dream to finish with a win here in Giro Rosa. But this can’t be the expectation. I’m very excited to start with a big and strong team. We don’t have only my card to play with but more riders who are able to win this race. This makes it even better. Elisa is one oft he big favourites and we will race side by side. I want to enjoy this tour and create the race with my team. We will see day by day what happens. It is difficult to plan the ten days in advance. There is only one thing we can be sure of: We will stand together and have each others backs, whatever happens! Let’s get it started!
