Giorgia Bronzini third in California Stage three after late puncture (with Video)

Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling’s Giorgia Bronzini finished third in the third stage of the Amgen Tour of California, in the state capital Sacramento, despite having to chase back to the peloton after a late puncture. The former two-time road World Champion crossed the line just behind stage-winner Coryn Rivera (Sunweb) and second place Arlenis Sierra (Astana) at the end of a 118km stage that saw the peloton split several times in the crosswinds.

“With 15km to go I had a puncture, and I was able to come back. I’m pretty happy because we are three and we got a podium. There are not too many teams doing this, so I’m really proud of of my two girls with me – my two teammates.”

After two hard days at altitude at Lake Tahoe, which saw the abandon of Australian Amy Cure with a knee injury, the three remaining members of Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling – Bronzini, Audrey Cordon-Ragot and Emilia Fahlin – were happy to get back to sea level at Sacramento.

With the flatter roads came the aggressive tactics from Rivera’s Sunweb team, along with Boels-Dolmans, who managed to split the peloton in the crosswinds of the first half. Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling’s riders were awake to the risk of being left behind, however, and managed to stay in the front half.Everything was going to plan until the final approach to Sacramento, until Bronzini was hit by a puncture just as the peloton was accelerating. The Italian had a quick wheel change from French teammate Cordon-Ragot, and was able to rejoin the peloton, but the extra effort may have cost her some sharpness in the sprint.

“We didn’t miss the echelons and we were really up to get this podium,” Bronzini smiled.“I wish [it was] a victory, but yeah, I’m happy.”
