Giorgia Bronzini wins Tour of California Final Criterium Stage (with Video)

Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling’s Giorgia Bronzini went two better than the previous day as she took victory on the final criterium stage of the 2017 Amgen Tour of California, Breakaway from Heart Disease Women’s Race. After having taken first place in the 70km stage’s one intermediate sprint, the former two-time road World Champion crossed the finish line comfortably clear of stage three winner Coryn Rivera (Sunweb), with Kirsten Wild (Cylance) in third.

“It’s really important to win here because America is the biggest crowd ever, and I’m really proud to be here,” Bronzini said afterwards. “I was a bit more confident today… I eventually found the left side which was also covered by the wind, and that gave me the right moment to go over.

“The sprint is just when you think it’s too late so you need to go by instinct, and instinct gave me a reason today.”

With the 20 lap race dominated by a general classification battle between the Boels-Dolmans and UnitedHealthcare teams, the pace was kept too high for anybody to successfully break away. This allowed Bronzini to bide her time in the peloton, however, and she was able to rehearse her final sprint as she beat Olympic Champion Anna van der Breggen (Boels-Dolmans) to the line to take the intermediate sprint at the end of lap 15.

In the final lap Bronzini was escorted into position by Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling teammates Audrey Cordon-Ragot and Emilia Fahlin. The Italian then found herself a place on the left side of the road, where she was sheltered from the wind, then unleashed her sprint to leave both Rivera and Wild behind.
