Grace Garner Blog: A week in Belgium

As the season was coming to a close, racing Lotto Belgium tour means there are few races on the calendar left. I had a while between this and Tour of Guangxi so I took a short time of rest, off the bike and had a family holiday in Norfolk!

After that, Lucy dropped me off in Belgium to see my boyfriend in Belgium on her way back to the Netherlands.

We were staying at the Breakaway in Belgium where some Wiggle High5 girls stayed a few years before I joined the team. I was staying with Gabz and 2 of his teammates who ride for Wiggins, which is a development U23 team based in the UK. They were doing some Pro Kermesses so I had a good time going to a few races and being on the other side, passing bottles and helping the guys out.

It was a good trip to kick-start my training back again, going out for some lovely rides and heading over to do some iconic routes including the Kwaremont (it never gets easier!).

Belgium is a great place for training and racing; we were lucky with the weather! On the day before we caught the ferry home we had the pleasure of going to Antwerp to celebrate teammate Amy Cure’s wedding! It was a beautiful day and really nice to share the special day with her.

On the way to the ferry we managed to get to Ronse to see Lucy’s Fiancé, Lars Van der Haar in a Brico Cyclocross race. It looked like a super tough course. I really admire Cyclocross riders, such a brutal sport! I really enjoyed my time in Belgium; now back between Leicestershire and Yorkshire for training.
