Date of Birth: 19/06/1997
Place of Birth: Leicester, Great Britain
Grace Garner (GBR), Lucy Garner’s younger sister, is one of the new signings of the Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling team for 2017. Born on19 June 1997, the 19 year old from Leicester, is one of the rising talents in Great-Britain. Grace turned professional in 2016 with the Podium Ambition team of Dame Sarah Storey but unfortunately that team folded at the end of the season due to financial problems.
Grace started cycling when she was eight years old. She grew up in Leicester and has lived there ever since. Grace is what you can call a real “home girl”. She loves to be near her parents, sister, grandparents and be around the areas where she has a lot of memories. She is a ambitious but caring person and her family is very important. Apart from cycling she hasn’t done anything seriously before. She did cross country running at school, but nothing really as competitive as cycling. Both Grace and Lucy got involved into cycling through their dad. There grandparents did a bit of racing, mostly time trials but her dad and uncle loved riding bikes, building bikes, really anything involving bikes. So it was inevitable that both Garners would eventually learn to love riding too. They joined their local bike club Leicestershire Road Club, and have carried on ever since.
Garner has completed her A levels in PE, Psychology and Business & Economics. She left school in the 2015 summer and hasn’t continued studying since to fully focus on cycling. However she got a part-time job and carried on with that. Although after her career she will definitely go back to school to finish her studies, but at the minute she wants to use all her time for cycling.
As a Junior Grace was world class with winning the prestigious EPZ Omloop van Borsele stage race in 2015, taking a lot of Junior Track National Titles, A European title team pursuit and a lot of victories in the British national races. But her first season as a pro was a hard learning curve. Her winter wasn’t great and the transition from a Junior to the Elite’s was tough. For her it was quite demoralising from winning international junior races to not finishing races with the Elites. But during the season things where improving and she learned a lot from the more experienced girls on the team.
2017 will be Grace her first year on an international top team like Wiggle High5. It is something she really wanted to be a part of one day and with Lucy being on the team it made things a bit easier to sign the contract. She’s looking forward to learn from the best.
