Julie Leth Blog: My Scandinavian Summer

August is probably the month I have been looking most forward to this year. I will be spending most of it in Scandinavia. Starting out with the European Road Championships in Herning, Denmark, this week. Putting the national kit on is always a special feeling, but even better, when racing in your home country. Herning is only an hour away from Aarhus, where I live, and having my friends and family on the side-line will be really special.

Last time I wore the national kit, was at the Worlds in Doha. We all know, how that went. Back then, we lined up with three riders. Now we will be lining up with 8 riders. Something I’ve never tried before. To be fair, I am more used to being om my own, when racing championships, so this a nice change. Danish women’s cycling has taken a big step up the recent years, and as I see it, we have got potential to take medals in all three female categories, which makes this even more exciting.

What happens in the race, is hard to predict now. The course is rather flat, but I do believe the race will be decided from either a small group, or a reduced bunch kick. One of the main influential factors will be the weather. We may be in August, and it is supposed to be summer, but we are in Denmark. Yesterday it was pouring, and today I was riding in knicks and jersey. The landscape is rather open around Herning, so the likeliness of wind is big. I am excited to see, how the races will play out!

After Europeans I will be swabbing the red and white kit for the Black Wiggle High5 kit. We are headed further north, to Sweden, where we will be lining up for the Vårgårda World Tour race. I did the race for the first time, when I turned elite in 2011, and since then, I only missed out in 2015, where I was out with a back injury after a crash. I think this must be my favourite race. Maybe because it is sort of close to home, but I also think it is a great and fun course that suits me. I really love this race.

Last but not least, we are road-tripping north again, to Halden, Norway, for Ladies Tour of Norway. This is one of the races I have never done, and I am very much looking forward to. Having been on a Norwegian team for 3,5 years, Norway almost feels like home!

When I am done with my Scandinavian tour, there is only one month left of the season. I cannot believe how fast time has passed!
