Grace Garner Blog: Change up in my training

I’ve had a while since my last race and it’s sometimes a point in where motivation has seen a little dip. But recently I’ve been traveling up to stay in Yorkshire and it’s been great! Sometimes a change of scenery can do a lot of good. I’ve been training on roads ridden on in both the men and women’s tour De Yorkshire races. It’s been tough and a contrast to my normal training roads. It’s been good for me, being able to push myself on harder terrain. Although it’s not my forte to ride hilly road races I hope one day to be...

Grace Garner Blog: Why Prudential is such a special race for me

The first year I did Prudential RideLondon was 2014 and it was a race that I will never forget. I was only 17 and being on the start line with the world’s best bike riders was very overwhelming. I can clearly remember in the final sprint seeing a blur of Marianne Vos’s world champ stripes and the golden Victoria Memorial statue in front of Buckingham palace. It was certainly something I won’t forget. I came 8th that year and it’s great to see how much the event has progressed from its first year in 2013. From a race predominantly full...

Grace Garner Blog: Getting sick at Nationals

Most of my blogs have been about the positives I’ve had in the season and positive topics, however I think this might change the tune.  My national champs week started early as my parents wanted to make our trip to the Isle of Man a ‘holiday’ while me and Lucy raced.  I got the ferry over and had a great first few days finding my feet on the climbs and getting used to the course, as well as watching the TT’s, hoping next year I can take part in that too. After the TT day I started to get a sore throat but shrugged it off and...

Grace Garner Blog: My favourite things to eat and drink on a road ride/race

Lucy and I have been cycling for a long time and throughout the years we have tried many different nutrition brands for when we are training and racing. Fortunately we have a great sponsor in High5 and I’ve loved using and trying the different products they have on offer. It’s sometimes a struggle to want to eat and drink when you are training and racing. When I have certain bars/gels/drinks with me then keeping hydrated and fuelled becomes a lot easier. In my bottles: My 2 favourite drinks are summer fruits Isotonic and tropical Zero...

Grace Garner Blog: Current Reads

Being on the move all the time it’s always handy to have a good book for the plane journey or for the hours of sitting with your feet up resting before a big race. Since I was young I’ve loved reading and I always have at least one book on the go. I normally read one fiction and one non-fiction. At the minute I’m reading Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell and also The Bedside Book of Psychology: From perception to personality by Christian Jarrett and Joannah Ginsburg. Having something light-hearted/ a romance is always good as you can...

Grace Garner Blog: Sisters

“What’s it like being on the same team as your sister?” has to be one of the most commonly asked questions I’ve had since the news came out I was joining Wiggle High5. Because we hadn’t raced with each other I always say, “Yes it’s great” as I didn’t really know what it would be like. The first camp in Belgium was the first real taste of being on the team, as all the staff and riders were together (minus one or two).  I used to wonder what it would be like to be on the inside of one of the top women’s teams in the...
