Lucy Garner: A trip down memory lane…

I thought this month I would let you take a look at some of the events that have happened in my life. I actually didn’t realise how many photos I had until deciding to do this… So here are a few pictures of ‘my life so far’.  The first picture I’ve picked does give me the giggles. This picture is actually me and my younger sister Grace. Before we got into modern bikes we were in a Veteran cycling club and for my 8th birthday I decided I wanted a Penny Farthing. We loved to dress up and go out with the club on long rides....

Lucy Garner Blog: What a race day looks like…. (Dottignies)

The race started at 14:00 and as I was already in Belgium with the team I thought it was good to spin the legs out on the rollers.  I’m actually not really a breakfast person (bad, I know) but food is fuel so I had some porridge with strawberries and a bit of honey.  On the way to the race. Love having my sister in the team with me! Teamwork. Nettie helping Grace pin her number on.  And the WINNER IS…. Our very own Belgian...

Lucy Garner Blog: The season has officially started!!.

After months of long hours on the bike and trying to replicate racing efforts it was finally time to start the 2017 season and race again. My first race was Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. A tough race to start with but I was determined to help the team and do the best I could. My last experience of OHB wasn’t pretty. Freezing cold temperatures, lots of crashing and frozen eyeballs was all I could remember. Luckily this time around it was pretty mild for spring in Belgium (6-9 degrees). Race started and I felt good. I felt like I could position...

Lucy Garner: A bit about what I get up to…

So, I wasn’t entirely sure about what to write about and I could bore you all with how my rainy training days I’ve been doing in Holland but I thought I would tell you a bit about what I get up to when I’m not training. Week 23rd-29th Jan. I’ve been living in Holland for around 4 years now and I have been on and off trying to master the Dutch language. It’s sooooo hard…. I do 1 or 2 lessons a week Monday and Tuesday afternoon. It is basically a school afternoon for me working from 13:00 until around 16:00, speaking Dutch. I’d...

Lucy Garner Blog: Coping with the late Summer Sunshine!

I haven’t raced for a while but that doesn’t mean the riding stops. I had a few easy days off after Route de France (8 day stage race) and then I was back on it putting in the hours and keeping speed in the legs. We’ve finally had a bit of summer these past few weeks in Holland with one day actually reaching 36 degrees. I love training in the hot sunshine but I also know that doing long rides and hard efforts in the beaming sunshine isn’t always good for your body. So I give you all some tips on how I cope with the warm weather and...

Lucy Garner Blog: Paris and London

These past couple of weeks have been a great success for women’s cycling. Having two very big races. La Course and Ride London being just a week a part from each other and both being broadcasted live on TV. I raced La Course last year and it didn’t end very well for me. The rain was pouring down and the roads became very slippery. I actually ended up after around 1 hour of the race pulling out after having 3 nasty crashes… I was hoping this year would be better. The weather was better at least however I didn’t have that much luck. My...

Lucy Garner Blog: What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, right?

After 13 years of competitive racing, I have finally had a crash, which left me in hospital with broken bones… 2 broken ribs in fact. I guess some people would say I’m pretty lucky, believe me, I’ve definitely had my fair share of crashes but nothing to serious. And although ribs are very painful, and yes, I have had to sneeze… OUCH. I am still able to ride my bike and it isn’t very ‘serious’. It’s always hard as an athlete coming to terms with an injury. We live to train and more importantly we live to race. The last thing we...

Lucy Garner Blog: Racing on Home Roads

It’s been a while since the Tour De Yorkshire but I want to reflect on my experience with being back home and racing on home soil. We arrived a few days before the race. A beautiful hotel in the middle of York. A city, which I would love to explore in my off-season. It looked amazing! I wasn’t actually feeling well at all so I arrived and had a room on my own. It’s only normal that when you are a professional athlete and not feeling 100% that you room on your own to recover and most importantly not spread germs onto your fellow team...

Lucy Garner Blog: Part of a Winning Team

We are well underway with the season and I have just competed in my first European stage race. Before competing in Holland at the Energiewacht tour I competed in GP Dottignies, it was a fast and aggressive race and as a team we worked amazingly together by following attacks and protecting our sprinter Giorgia. I was happy that I could position Chloe and Giorgia coming into the final kms and seeing Giorgia cross the line with her hands up in the air was really special. It brought a lot of confidence for the team! Knowing I had a stage race...

Lucy Garner Blog: The European Season Starts Here!

By Lucy Garner It’s my first season with Wiggle High5 and it was great to start the season off in Australia. It was a couple of months ago now, but it was a good race for me to start the 2016 season and to make some hours on the bike training with the girls. We already had some nice results with Nettie claiming a win and Dani doing extremely well overall and in the mountain classification. The weeks flew by and it was already time to start the European racing off and my first race was Omloop van het Hageland. I was very curious/nervous to...
